Review:

We don’t get asked to do audiobook reviews which kind of sucks since I listen to them all the time. I know, I know I just need to start doing the reviews on the books I listen too. The problem is that’s like three to five books a week. Anyway, I was excited to take on this review because I knew I’d finish it before I had to start my next book for review. And let me tell you I read slow, which is way audio is awesome for me.

Okay on with my review. 😉 Lauren Helms is a new author for me which is saying something since you guys know how I pretty read and review a small about of authors since I’m normally writing myself. Lauren is definitely someone to watch for. I really enjoyed Level Me Up, and will probably pick up her next book to listen to. I also enjoyed Lacy’s narration of the characters. The only hiccup I had with the book overall was some of the transitions from chapter to chapter sometimes they felt a little choppy and cut off. Like there should have been a little more in one chapter before the switch. Even with that said the story itself is really good. The characters are developed as are the secondary characters and I loved the concept of Dex’s job and that he wasn’t what some might consider a typical gamer.

The relationship between Dex and Morgan is interesting as is the friends dynamic. In someways Level Me Up reminds me of Penny Reid’s Neanderthal Seeking Human only in that Morgan sometimes has social skills issues when it comes to Dex which is actually kind of funny as much as it is heartbreaking to listen to at times. I did laugh with this book which is always a plus for me.

So if you’re looking for something new try Level Me Up by Lauren Helms I think you’ll be glad you did.

About Lauren Helms:

Author Lauren Helms has been an avid reader from a young age. After starting a book review site, that launched her fully into the book world, she decided to take the plunge and write her first novel. Since she was working for a video game strategy guide publisher at the time, she decided to mix what she knew best, video games and romance. Jumping all in, she joined NaNoWrimo and a month later had a 50K word first draft. Lauren lives in Indianapolis, IN with her video game playing husband, two little girl book nerds, and a little boy who will hopefully be a gamer boy too some day!
