NICUNurse 96 Review:

I’ll confess that I’ve read about 95% of everything Mrs. Elliot has written.  I’ve seen her writing progress and her stories get deeper each time.  Most of the time I don’t feel that strongly against a character but this book had me really having to separate my personal feelings about a character from the rest of the review process.  I apparently have a really hard time getting behind people who appear weak.  Not physically, but emotionally.  And Holden, I still don’t feel the love for him.  The story itself was truly heart wrenching.  And she delved into a subject that many just don’t even talk about with what happened with Holden.  But just like I find myself frustrated with females that won’t stand up and fight, I was more than frustrated with Holden’s lack of motivation to fight for what he really wanted out of his life.  Emylie is a very strong character and I felt she deserved someone as strong to compliment her.  However, I was also frustrated with her in the beginning for just keeping with the status quo and not really caring about moving forward.  With that said, this wasn’t my story so again, I’m struggling with how much I argued with the major characters in my head!.  By the end I was happy to see Holden growing into someone I felt Emylie deserved and that she finally saw that she was worth more than she gave herself credit for.  So in all honesty, I guess this really was a great story as it truly had me wishing I could engage with the characters, even if it would have been just to give them a good smack on the head and say, “Wake up!  You’re worth so much more!”  By the end I had (mostly) come around to loving who they became.  For a story to have you that involved in the characters, regardless of personal feelings, it has to be good.

Mrs. Elliot’s writing style has managed to stay true to her humble beginnings as an indie author yet improve along the way as well.  It’s been a pleasure to watch her career grow along with her writing.  I highly recommend this book and look forward to her future books as well.
