She changed her name. Her look. Her location. But what if running away isn’t enough to save her?
Physical therapist Scarlett Reed is looking for a fresh start when she takes a job in another state. Her rules are simple: don’t get close to anyone, and flee at the first sign of danger.
Wounded soldier Malcolm McCoy plans to work hard in rehab so he can get back to saving the world. He isn’t looking for a relationship, but something about prickly Scarlett intrigues him more than it should.
When she needs a place to stay, Mal offers her the apartment over his garage—and finds it nearly impossible to keep his hands off his sassy neighbor. Scarlett knows she shouldn’t get involved, but a little friends with benefits action can’t hurt.
Or can it? Someone in Scarlett’s past circles closer, waiting for a chance to strike. Mal will do whatever it takes to protect her—but it might not be enough to survive what’s coming…
As soon as they think they’ve weathered the storm, they’ll discover it’s only beginning.

EXCERPT
He barked a laugh. “You’re fun, Scar. I really like having you around.”
She flushed with pleasure. “Happy to be of service.”
“You know, when I woke up in that hospital, I didn’t know what they were going to tell me about my leg. I didn’t know the extent of the damage, or if I’d even have a leg. I admit I was feeling kind of lost when the doc told me it was going to take time and I’d be out of work for a while, but meeting you has been the highlight of the whole thing.”
The flush grew warmer. Scarlett balled up her fist and socked him playfully in the arm. “Don’t even try and make me cry. It won’t work.”
He tweaked her nose and she rocked back, surprised but also flustered by his touch.
“I’m not trying. I just want you to know that I like you. Being with you is easy, and I don’t say that to many people. No reply necessary, so don’t wrack your brain trying to think of an appropriate response.”
“Okay, I won’t. But thanks. I’m taking everything you said as a compliment, so don’t ruin it for me with a joke.”
His grin did things to her insides. “Not planning to.”
The woman returned from the back room, smiling stupidly at Mal. “If you go around to the loading dock, they’ll have the couch waiting for you. Is there anything else I can help you with?”
Scarlett rolled her eyes. The other woman didn’t see because she was too busy smiling at Mal. He was smiling back, and Scarlett could see that the brain light had gone off in the woman’s head. She was operating on hormones and desire at this point.
“I’m going to grab a couple of other things. I’ll be back in a few minutes,” she said to Mal. “You can stay here if you want.”
“Nope,” he said. “Going with you.”
They walked away from the counter, and Scarlett threw him a side-eye. “You turn them stupid. It’s amazing.”
“What?”
“That girl. She could be a PhD in nuclear physics and you’d still knock every thought out of her head simply by looking at her.”
Mal laughed. “You’re giving me too much credit. I’d say you’re pretty damned smart, and I don’t turn you stupid, do I?”
“Not possible,” she sniffed. “I’m immune.”
“I’m wounded.”
“I know. It’s how we met.”
He laughed again. “Jesus, Scar. You’re so full of sass. Sometimes I think…”
“Think what?” she asked when he didn’t continue the thought.
“Nothing important. What else are you getting in this place?”
She put her hand on the round end table, thankful it was still there. It’d been marked down, too. Only twenty-five-dollars today. “This, and maybe a couple of pictures. I still want to know what you were thinking, though.”
He sighed as he hefted the table in one arm. It was light or she would have yelled at him for it. He didn’t need to overtax his leg. He’d only been home for a few days, and it was just a month out from his surgery. Plenty of healing left to do.
“No, you really don’t,” he said.
She faced him, stubbornly unwilling to continue. She shouldn’t care what he’d been thinking, but she did. She couldn’t help it. “Maybe I do. I get to be the judge of what I want to know and what I don’t.”
“Yeah, but once you know, you can’t un-know.”
“Mal.”
“All right, Scar. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” He leaned toward her just enough that his voice was only for her. Her skin tingled at his proximity, her breath feeling heavier in her chest.
Then he said the words. “Sometimes I think I want to kiss you.”
NICUnurse’s Review of HOT Storm by Lynn Raye Harris
I’ve been a fan of Lynn Raye Harris’s HOT series books since 2013. I followed the series avidly (possibly rabidly??) until I fell into the world of book blogs and reviewers. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of great books out there, I’ve managed to read some here and there because she cemented herself early on in my discovery of ebooks as a romantic suspense author who I really enjoyed her writing style and voice. So when I randomly came upon an announcement for this release, I was a bit beside myself with excitement (read: fangirl down!).
In a previous review, I said the hero, Cade, was my favorite. I totally changed my mind, but I usually love each new hero a bit more than the last, so who knows what I’ll claim next. I’ve also said Lynn Raye Harris consistently delivers characters with depth, bravery, loyalty, and heart, which still holds true with HOT Storm. Mal and Scarlett are two of the most complex H/H so far. Both are struggling to conquer formidable issues physically, emotionally, and mentally. Mal is as loyal as they come, so his problems totally mess with his mind. Scarlett’s biggest struggle is learning to trust a man like Mal. When danger shows up, it clarifies a lot of things for our hero and heroine.
Their story will more than entertain fans of friends-to-lovers military romantic suspense. It’s fun, sarcastic, funny, and a bit less sexy than other books from this author. And, of course, it’s full of suspense. IMHO, you could pick any of her books and not be disappointed. She’s at the top of my favorite romantic suspense authors list for a reason and has been for many years now.
NICUnurse’s Rating: 5 out of 5 propellers!
NICUnurse’s Review of HOT Angel by Lynn Raye Harris
I’ve been a fan of Lynn Raye Harris’s HOT series books since 2013. I followed the series avidly (possibly rabidly??) until I fell into the world of book blogs and reviewers. Overwhelmed by the sheer number of great books out there, I’ve managed to read some here and there because she cemented herself early on in my discovery of ebooks as a romantic suspense author who I really enjoyed her writing style and voice. So when I randomly came upon an announcement for this option as part of the release celebration for HOT Storm, I was a bit beside myself with excitement (read: fangirl down!).
Enough gushing. On with the review. Let me start by saying I’m not a fan of insta-love books, and some have labeled this one as such. I disagree. It’s been a slow burn for a while between our hero and heroine long before the book’s opening scene (inferred from a previous story). The connection between the hero and heroine makes more sense when viewed from this lens, but some reviewers seem to have missed that from the backstory woven throughout the plot.
Lynn Raye Harris consistently delivers characters with depth, bravery, loyalty, and heart. Some of the heroes are more alpha than others, but mostly they are a good blend of leaders and caring men. And Cade Rodgers is my favorite to date. While Brooke feels like she’s broken, she’s more of a survivor and braver than she realizes. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the text messages had me truly laughing out loud. If you enjoy military romantic suspense books, this is one you’ll want to read. It’s fun, sassy, sexy, and funny, yet full of suspense. Honestly, you could pick any of her books and not be disappointed. She’s at the top of my list for a reason and has been there for many years now.
