Instant number-one New York Times Best Seller!

Irresistibly action-packed and full of lethal surprises, this stunning new fantasy series from Victoria Aveyard, number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Red Queen series, begins where hope is lost and asks: When the heroes have fallen, who will take up the sword?

A strange darkness grows in Allward.

Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea.

She soon discovers the truth: She is the last of an ancient lineage – and the last hope to save the world from destruction. But she won’t be alone. Even as darkness falls, she is joined by a band of unlikely companions:

  • A squire, forced to choose between home and honor.
  • An immortal, avenging a broken promise.
  • An assassin, exiled and bloodthirsty.
  • An ancient sorceress, whose riddles hide an eerie foresight.
  • A forger with a secret past.
  • A bounty hunter with a score to settle.

Together they stand against a vicious opponent, invincible and determined to burn all kingdoms to ash, and an army unlike anything the realm has ever witnessed.

Fly Girl’s Review

I shouldn’t be surprised that the bottom of her website says, “You call it play God, I call it worldbuilding part I.” Can you guess why I’m seeing RED?!?!! The writer of the Red Queen gives us a new reason to hate her with the first book in her new series. Just to clarify I listened to this, so my spelling of names may not be correct.

This story is so gripping in the prologue you are mystified as to what will happen next. She goes from this gruesome battle in the prologue to a young girl walking along the peaceful coast line in. It makes you anxious to get to the action, but she holds off for quite sometime before you get that. Again, a rollercoaster, start up, ease you up the mountain…You all know what comes next. A fast paced action filled journey of personal discovery, truth, maybe a little justice, lots of conflict. She bands together a group of true misfits that make no sense at all to being together until the end when you realize each one has just a little to give to the task at hand. Like a baker with all their tools set to the side in preparation to make the most deliciously beautiful cake.

In the Red Queen series I knew where most of the “surprises” were and wasn’t too shocked, but in this one, there were two major ones I did not see coming. Maybe that’s why I “See Red,” because I wasn’t seeing her plan. I pride myself on figuring those out before they happen, but dang these were good. I’d love to hear what you think they were if you want to respond in the comments. And they were so good they made me angry…The villains are dastardly in this series.

You can tell she wrote this during the pandemic because there are highs and lows in it just like everyone’s emotional state last year. Funny though, when a twist happens I imagine her going to her writing cave and saying, “F**K *T, some has to die to make me feel better today.” I think in the distant future you will be able to see what was written in 2020 because it will reflect the emotional rollercoaster we were all on.

If you loved the Red Queen series, expect more this time around. She is going to bring it in spades and probably try to cut your heart out as she kills all the characters you love or turns them into villains. The only part I was missing so far is I don’t see anyone that is redeemable yet. They are all good or bad, no in between.

Normally I would give this a 4.5, because as you all know, I hate cliffhangers. But this one has somewhat of an ending. Not going to spoil it, but I’m giving this a 5 of 5.

*********************************************************************I’m going with there will be more in this series, but no information is yet available on her website or other places I’ve checked. However, big news Peacock television is going to do a Red Queen streaming series…Can’t wait!!!
