About FORTUNATE SON:

Ry Archer and Bowe Keller are as different as night and day. But that doesn’t stop the childhood frenemies from reconnecting whenever one of them needs some help tackling any of life’s major puzzles, like figuring out why getting what you always thought you wanted isn’t living up to all the hype. They might constantly rub each other the wrong way (except for the times when they rub each other the really-really right way), but there is no denying they’ve always made one hell of a great team. They manage to balance each other out… when they aren’t driving each other crazy.

For Ry, he thought he had the perfect girl, the one who was going to run headfirst into a methodically planned future. He was going to marry young and have the same kind of legendary, life-long romance his parents did… or so he believed. His girl was going to stand by his side as he chased his dream of being a professional football player all the way to the NFL.

He was wrong.

Now, Ry’s gotta figure out the difference between a bruised heart and a broken one, and the only person who can teach him the difference is Bowe.

Bowe always felt like she had to run before she learned to walk to keep up with her father’s musical legacy. He’s her hero, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud. Bowe’s about to figure out that maybe she wasn’t meant to be in a rock and roll band and that it is possible she let her father’s success cloud her idea of what making music should be. Bowe needs to find her own path to fame, and there’s a good chance she wouldn’t be brave enough or bold enough to start over if Ry Archer hadn’t charmed his way back into her life when she least expected it.

Some days they’re enemies. Other days they’re lovers. For a while, they were strangers. But now, it feels more like they might have always been soulmates.

Eventually, Ry and Bowe realize that letting go of an old dream and creating a new one is much easier to do with the right person by your side.

NICUnurse’s Review of Fortunate Son by Jay Crownover

It’s no secret that Jay Crownover is one of my favorite authors. She had me at Rule years ago, and I’ve never looked back. (If you haven’t read her Marked Men and Saints of Denver series, do yourself a favor and drop what you’re doing and read them all…like right now!) Needless to say, she’s also one of my automatic 1-click authors. She swore that there would be no return to the Marked Men and Saints of Denver series for a very long time. But for whatever reason, she changed her mind. And I, for one, am positively giddy over that decision. It’s still a series I reread from time to time, so getting the next generation’s story is a surprise extra bonus.

The thing I like most about Jay is that she writes what she wants to write and when she wants to write it. But when she does write, her words never fail to suck me into the story, and nine times out of 10, I can’t put it down until it’s all said and done. While it was disappointing to hear over and over that there wouldn’t be a 2nd generation series, she continued to produce books that kept her on my automatic 1-click list. Her books are diverse and follow no patterns, but that keeps them relevant and exciting, so I can’t fault her for that.

OK. Fortunate Son. In a nutshell…so friggin’ worth the wait!

First off, I must put it out there that this is an absolute stand-alone title. I love the Marked Men and Saints of Denver series and will recommend them to my dying day. But you do NOT have to read them to enjoy every moment of this book. The balance between backstory and information dump is a fine line, and as in all things, Jay walks it well. Fortunate Son is a friends-to-enemies-to lovers second-chance story. But what you think you know when the story begins is not what’s eventually revealed. (Duh…like this author would ever be that predictable!)

Both Bowe and Ry, our heroine and hero respectively, do a lot of growing up and self-reflection during the entire book, so you’re never quite sure if they will change so much they won’t make it. Life just seems to keep throwing obstacles in their way, but with the queen of angst writing their story, are we really surprised? And there are so many possibilities for more stories hinted at all through this one that I’m desperate to know where the other stories will go. Whether we get those stories or not remains to be seen. But I’m oh so hopeful and not afraid to beg!

NICUnurse’s Rating: I doubt this is any surprise, but I give Fortunate Son by Jay Crownover 5 out of 5 propellers and would absolutely give it more if I could!
