As the fixer for Blackbridge Security, Quinten Lake is the man that comes in and cleans up after people make stupid decisions.

Which means he didn’t want to be the one teaching lustful women gun safety.

There were guys on the team better suited for the task.

Get in and get out, that’s his motto, something he lives by not only at work but also in his personal life.

And he could be doing just that if it weren’t for the internet.

But if #BlackbridgeSpecial wasn’t trending online he would’ve never met Hayden Prescott.

He wouldn’t be wondering why she won’t make eye contact with him.

He’s supposed to teach her the skills to protect herself, but his ego is encouraging him to be her means of protection.

She isn’t impressed, and he’s left wondering if she’ll ever open her eyes and finally see him.

NICUnurse’s Review of Calculated Risk by Marie James

Calculated Risk is the fifth book of Marie James’ Blackbridge Security series. All of the books are marketed as stand-alone titles, but if you were going to choose just one book to read in the series, you could start with this one (or any of them, really). It’s an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romantic suspense with very little angst, which is a bit more true to the genre, in my humble opinion.

Hayden’s first impression of Quinten isn’t the best, leading to hostile feelings on her part that are hard to overcome. But he sees something in her eyes that pulls him in and won’t let him give up on getting to know her better. Quinten is used to fixing things. He’s not used to being asked to sit on the sidelines and letting others handle complicated situations. But Hayden isn’t looking for a savior. She’s fiercely independent and plans to stay that way. When things take a dangerous turn, she still doesn’t want a fix. She wants someone to stand beside her and be there as her rock. And that’s the hardest thing she could ever ask of Quinten.

I quite simply adored Hayden. She’s a tough cookie and wasn’t looking for a man. She was doing just fine as a single gal. Although her fierce independence and stubbornness did get her into quite a harrowing situation. Despite nearly overwhelming fear, though, she handled it. However, it almost gave Quinten a heart attack, but when she asked him to let her stand on her own two feet, he listened. And that totally made me swoon. Alphas are not used to sitting by and letting their women fight their own battles. But that was so important for Hayden, so the fact that he did the hard thing was just…sweet.

This story felt more true to the Blackbridge series than Truth Be Told (book four). Don’t get me wrong; I loved that book. But it was definitely different. So Calculated Risk felt like coming home in a way. I’ve loved watching the brotherhood and camaraderie develop and grow among the Blackbridge guys throughout this journey. They are more like a family and brotherhood now than in the beginning. And seeing these alphas fall and fall hard, one after the other, has been nothing short of heartwarming. And who wouldn’t love a parrot with a huge personality like Puff Daddy?! I love that he’s been a staple in this series! As you can tell, I’m pretty invested in this series at this point and can honestly recommend any of the books. But if you’re looking for more suspense and less angst, this is probably the best pick for you.

NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Calculated Risk by Marie James 4.5 out of 5 propellers!

Meet Marie James

Let’s see…where to begin…

I’m inching up on the BIG 4-0. The gray hairs are doubling what seems like daily, and the wrinkles and laugh lines are more pronounced than ever.

I have an amazing husband (Married just over 15 years.)

We have two boys we’re doing our best to raise as respectful gentleman.

I have a master’s degree in criminal justice which I used to work as a juvenile probation office until deciding to write full-time in June of 2019. So that means there’s usually always some criminal/law element to my novels.

If I’m not writing; I’m reading.

My favorite genres recently are bully/reverse harem and enemies to lovers. Maybe I’m reliving my traumatic teen years through the girls who actually end up with the boys. (Not that I would change my history since it’s gotten me exactly where I need to be!)

I love coffee. I miss carbs. Music is LIFE. I try not to be too serious.
