Deformed. Dangerous. Damned.
One night ripped my life away and left me a monsterโ€”the scarred gargoyle of a man who lived in the stained-glass shadows of a crumbling cathedral, selling my soul in order to seek vengeance on those who destroyed my life.
Until one day, the chimes I heard werenโ€™t from the bell tower of Notre Dame, but from the bejeweled gypsy invading my space.
Though she swears her research is legitimate, her beauty shimmers with secrets. I canโ€™t trust glittering eyes that arenโ€™t repulsed by me, nor the tempting smile that is laden with lust. I canโ€™t trust her.
So, Iโ€™ll watch and waitโ€ฆ and ignore how her sharp wit and bewitching charm scorch the shackles of my restraint and enchant me into her fire.
Iโ€™ll uncover the truth before she gets too close. Before she sees the broken man beneath the scarred beast. And before I give in to her temptation.
Sheโ€™s a threat to everything Iโ€™ve worked forโ€”a threat to my cathedral and a threat to my revenge.
And, most dangerous of all, a threat to my stone-cold heart.

NICUnurse’s Review of The Gargoyle and The Gypsy by Dr. Rebecca Sharp

Before I even dive into the review, fair warning: The Gargoyle and The Gypsy is the first book in the duet, so there is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end. If you are like me and hate to be left hanging, wait for book two, then devour both books at one time.

This is a wonderful retelling of The Hunchback of Notre Dame that adds very recent events to make it fresh and new for those of us literature buffs. Itโ€™s definitely a darker tale of love, loss, betrayal, revenge, and vengeance.ย

Iโ€™ll be 100% honest here. Sometimes the verbose and flowery, almost poetic language this author uses is easy to skim over in her contemporary romance. However, in this book, I felt like most of it was necessary to really build the world, introduce and enhance the characters, create the mystery, and set the scene for book two. There were parts at the beginning that didnโ€™t necessarily grab me, and I was able to put it down for a bit. But once the mystery began to bloom, I found myself unable to walk away. There are some graphic scenes regarding religion and terrorism (nothing uncouth, though), so if these are sensitive topics for you, this might not need to be your next read.

Esme and Quinton have both been through so much hurt in their lives prior to their first meeting. As the book moves on and delves into those past hurts, it genuinely becomes even more heartbreaking. Itโ€™s going to be super hard to wait until the end of the year for book two because my heart desperately wants these two to find their HEA. By the end of this story, my mind had so many possibilities of where their story could go, and Iโ€™m anxious to know if any of my ideas are correct. If you like darker contemporary romance and donโ€™t mind a massive cliffhanger, youโ€™re going to want to pick this book up right away!ย

NICUnurseโ€™s Rating: I give The Gargoyle and The Gypsy 4 out of 5 propellers!
