They arrive on the tide, and with them, they bring death.

Reyna heard the warnings all her life. Pirates take what they want and kill what they don’t. One just washed up on her shore, and she must choose whether or not to ignore that warning and save him.

But, five captains have proven that the warning can be wrong. Five men that will fight to keep her safe and win her love. Together they search for a power that could change the world or destroy it. Reyna could be their Queen or be consumed by it. A pirate king threatens to kill them all.
Some will die.

She trusts her captains but can she trust her destiny and those that put her on this path?

Fly Girl’s Review

It has been a long wait for this book to come out. But boy was it worth the wait. The world building and character depth is really getting strong in book two. Before I go much further though, please understand this must be read in order with Born Magic first. There is not enough back story for this to be a stand alone novel. Also, this review will have spoilers about book one Born Magic. If you plan to read the series and haven’t gotten through Born Magic you don’t want to read this review any further.

Secret Magic gives us a taste of much stronger relationships between Reyna and her men. She builds stronger bonds with the two focused on in this book than the others she was with in the first book. If S. Lawerence can keep up this level of intimacy with the remaining men, she is onto something big. I can’t wait to see how Reyna is with the others. Reyna also discovers more powers as her relationships get deeper and stronger. As she starts to feel a responsibility for their lives, her magic gets stronger and new powers manifest.

Lastly, the story reveals a lot more about why the five men are tied together and how they got to the places they are right now. There isn’t much about the King which is a shame. I’d like to know more about him and what is driving him other than entities intervening in the world. There is a lot of action in this one compared to book one, so be prepared to constantly be on the go because it is fast paced.

We all knew there was someone perpetuating the story and putting all the puzzle pieces in place for show downs and to see how connected Reyna is to her magic and the men in her life. We finally get a look at one of them, the one keeping the King in line and fueling his rage to find Reyna. And that one is just ugly on so many levels, but her need for vengeance is insatiable. I’m sure we are going to get more from her later on in the series, but the start makes my skin crawl.

I wish she had done a little more back story in this one since it’s been so long since Born Magic came out. Hopefully she will backfill us on the next one a little better. Also, there was a cliffhanger and you guys know I’m fair when it comes to that markdown even though it’s part of a series. I’m definitely anxiously awaiting the next one to come out so we can see how connected the Queen’s men are to her. I also looking forward to finding out what other powers she discovers she has.

When Fallon is betrayed and thrown to the sea, his last thought as he sinks to the dark depths is for his brothers. He wakes in a cave with a beautiful woman and the knowledge that it’s only a matter of time before the hunters find him.The warning comes true as her village burns to the ground. Pirates hunting for something buried long ago. A pirate king searching for power to rule the world and all that live in it. Reyna can trust a pirate or be killed by one, and either choice could lead to death.
