A swoon-worthy romance from USA Today Bestselling Author J.H. Croix!

An ex-military pilot and a sunshiney barista take opposites attract to the next level.

I’m blaming it on the porcupine who broke into Cammi’s coffee truck. If that didn’t happen, I never would’ve kissed her.

I’ve spent years ignoring the spark that flares any time I get close to Cammi. I don’t do romance, and I don’t lose control. Ever.

One kiss will never be enough though. Not with Cammi. I can’t stay away from her. She’s sultry, sassy and a little sweet. In more ways than one.

But I’m not the guy for her. I’m cynical and jaded, and I came to Alaska to escape the ghosts of my past. I’m not planning to fall for a girl who’s looking for a fairy tale.

Except my plans don’t seem to matter anymore. Only winning her heart matters.

NICUnurse’s Review of Evers & Afters by J.H. Croix

This author is new to me. I love to give new to me authors a chance because I’ve found several favorites that way. And even though this book is the second in the author’s Dare With Me series, it was marketed as a standalone title, so I decided to give it a try.

Evers & Afters is definitely an opposites attract story. Cammi and Elias couldn’t be more different if they tried. He’s grumpy and doesn’t let many people in. She’s a ray of sunshine with a large group of friends. Elias is drawn to her but doesn’t think he’s good enough for Cammi. And she was just burned by a relationship in a serious way. And Elias could absolutely demolish her heart. But the chemistry is too much to ignore.

I really wanted to love this book. Honestly, I did. I always go into a new book hoping it’s going to be my new favorite. But I had a few issues with it. First, even though the description says it’s a standalone title, I felt like I’d been plopped down in the middle of a relationship that had some pretty relevant backstory. Also a bit bothersome was the addition of so many secondary characters. They were distracting to me. Second, it felt like both Cammi and Elias kept circling back to why they felt like they didn’t need to be with each other rather than truly growing. So when they did hit that point of growth, it felt rushed. And third, the writing felt…stilted…like it didn’t flow well. With all of that said, I will be going back and reading book one in the series to see if it helps make this one make more sense, especially in the beginning. BUT all in all, it was entertaining enough for me to finish the book so I could experience Cammi and Elias’ HEA.

If you like opposites attract, small-town romance, give this book a chance. What didn’t work for me so much might not be an issue for you, and you might just love it.

NICUnurse’s Rating: I give Evers & Afters by J.H. Croix 3 out of 5 propellers.
