Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry is now live!

From the moment Quinn Montgomery sat behind her first snare and cymbal set, she was destined for fame and glory. As Hush Note’s infamous female drummer, she sets the rhythm for the band’s chart-topping hits. When people tap their feet to their music, it’s to her pulse.

Quinn is content to live in a world away from her family and the cage of her youth. Her only regret is leaving Graham Hayes behind without a goodbye. No matter how many sold-out stadiums she plays, no matter how many crowds sing her songs, his voice haunts her when the music stops.

When a family tragedy forces her to return home to Montana, she plans to leave the second she’s paid her respects. But seeing Graham again turns her life upside down. As a boy, he wasn’t able to make her stay. As a man, he might be her future. If they can mend their rifts and find solace in the refrains.

Excerpt

She took one step before stopping. A smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, the same corner I’d kissed earlier, and I fought the urge to stand and capture that mouth again. Her smile broadened, though there was pain in her eyes.

“Colin is a cool kid. You’re a good dad, Graham. I always knew you would be.”

She might as well have stabbed me in the chest.

“Thanks,” I said, watching as she walked away.

Fuck me.

When had I never loved that woman?

Maybe that kiss had woken me up. Maybe it had made me realize how goddamn lonely I’d been without her. I had Colin, but there was a corner of my heart that would always belong to Quinn.

I should have followed her nine years ago.

Because now it was too late.

NICUnurse’s Review of Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry

Devney Perry is quickly heading to the top of my favorite authors’ list, and Rifts and Refrains is a good example of why she’s moving on up. This is the second book in the Hush Note series but they are all written as standalone titles. However, since there are only going to be 3 books, I highly recommend starting from the beginning to get the best reading experience from all of them.

What I Liked Most About the Book: The second chance with your first love. Probably because that’s my personal love story, but I loved this second-chance romance so, so much. But it’s not just about the romance, but about the second chance itself…with all of Quinn’s relationships. And it’s about learning to live through grief, growing and maturing, and realizing that sometimes, no matter how badly we want people we love and admire to be perfect, they treat us unfairly and live with regrets just like we do.

NICUnurse’s Rating: Rifts and Refrains unpacks a LOT of emotion and not just with the main characters. Quinn ran away from all of her relationships because she was hurt, and now, she’s having to live with the consequences of that. Not so hard to do when you’re a rockstar who’s life won’t let you stop long enough to think about those long, lost relationships for the most part. But when a huge loss rocks you, and you have to go home to confront it all, it’s definitely not a walk down easy street. There were many scenes in this story where I shed some major tears for all that Quinn was going through. But in the end, love won out, and isn’t that what we all hope for? This is not your typical sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll rockstar romance. It’s so much more, so much deeper, and so very worth your time. I’m not a huge rockstar romance fan. I think it’s a bit overdone at this point. But Devney Perry definitely brought a fresh, new look to this trope for us in this book.

I give Rifts and Refrains by Devney Perry 5 out of 5 propellers!
