Love, life…death—a few seconds can change everything.
I’m a criminal defense lawyer determined to build my own firm from the ground up.
My ex, the new prosecutor, complicates things; especially when the animosity between us infects the whole courtroom.
Then I meet Callum—my brother’s friend, a bounty hunter, and the accused in my new case.
The charge—sexual battery.
The supposed victim—a bail jumper he’s been chasing halfway across the country.
My instincts tell me he’s innocent, which I set about proving, but I didn’t expect to fall for him in the process.
Our mutual attraction becomes a tempting complication neither of us can resist.
When a body turns up, Callum and I realize a war is raging around us; and one of us is the target. With an ex-husband eager to take me down, and a woman determined to ruin Callum, we need to figure out who the perpetrator is…before time runs out.
NICUnurse’s Review of Seconds by Freya Barker
Freya Barker is a new-to-me author, at least in the sense that I hadn’t read any of her books up until now. But I’ve seen and heard a lot of buzz about her books. Since I’m always on the hunt for my next favorite author, I thought I’d jump right in with Seconds. It’s a novel written in the Salvation Society series, but all of the books are written as standalone titles. The series takes place in Corinne Michaels’s Salvation series world, but you don’t have to read any of those books prior to reading Seconds. I haven’t read any of them (I don’t think…), and I had no problem keeping up with the characters or the storyline.
What I Liked Most About the Book: I’m a romantic suspense junkie, so this seemed like the best place to start with Freya Barker’s books. I liked that most of the characters were…more mature, shall we say? Reagan and Cal are both very strong characters who know what they are looking for in life, but they aren’t afraid to let someone special in. And despite some not-so-pleasant history where relationships are concerned, they weren’t afraid to take a chance on a happily ever after.
NICUnurse’s Rating: The book pulled me in from the very beginning. The story’s pace kept things moving, so there wasn’t a part where I felt it was lagging. And the mystery kept me guessing until the very end, which I love. It always seems like a let down when I can guess the who and the why before a book’s end. All three of those elements added up to a book that kept me entertained. I enjoyed Freya Barker’s style of writing, so I do look forward to reading more of her work. All in all, I spent an enjoyable few hours in her Seconds world, feeling engaged with the characters and the story, which is really what I look for in any book I pick up. If you like romantic suspense, especially those with more mature characters, this book is going to be one you want to grab very soon.
I give Seconds by Freya Barker 4 out of 5 propellers!
