This is an empire of sky ships and floating cities. It is a world where the Mysteries hold sway. Students of Law, War, Thought, and Wind try to tame these secrets. Those who can, enter and enjoy the privileges of those living above. Those who can’t, remain in squalor in the Fells. It is a world where ghosts prey on the minds of the weak and the vulnerable.

Where even children are signed away through a deed of servitude. This is a world ruled by the Fitzempress family. A world that is about to change forever.

Theirs is a world of opposites. The privileged live in sky manors held aloft by a secretive magic known only as the Mysteries. Below, the earthbound poor are forced into factory work to maintain the engine of commerce. Only the wealthy can afford to learn the Mysteries, and they use their knowledge to further lock their hold on society.

Cettie Pratt is a waif doomed to the world below, until an admiral attempts to adopt her. But in her new home in the clouds, not everyone treats her as one of the family.

Sera Fitzempress is a princess born into power. She yearns to meet the orphan girl she has heard so much about, but her father deems the girl unworthy of his daughter’s curiosity.

Neither girl feels that she belongs. Each seeks to break free of imposed rules. Now, as Cettie dreams of living above and as Sera is drawn to the world below, they will follow the paths of their own choosing.

But both girls will be needed for the coming storm that threatens to overturn both their worlds.

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler continues his wondrous Harbinger series in which two young women unite as two worlds approach the brink of war…

Though relations between Princess Seraphin Fitzempress and her father have been strained, Sera’s royal position has remained unchallenged. Filled with self-doubt, she struggles to grasp the Mysteries—her greatest trial yet.

An education in the enigmatic magic is a necessary one, should Sera plan to rise in her station and invoke her powers during war. But the emperor’s death now leaves both Sera and her ambitious father eligible for the throne—a contest the prince regent intends to win. Even if it means an alliance with a rival empire.

Sera’s hope lies in Cettie, a waif raised in the world below, whose life has intertwined with Sera’s in the most unexpected ways. The Mysteries come easily to Cettie, and her studies have begun to yield new insight into her growing powers. But those same powers put Cettie in the path of those who would destroy her.

Now as the threat of war ignites and an insidious sickness spreads throughout the kingdom, Sera and Cettie will need to gather their courage and fight for each other’s lives…and for the future of their endangered world.

Fly Girl’s Review:

I really love fantasy. After Romance it is my favorite and when there is both–it gives me goosebumps. This series was so addictive I binge listened. I put on headphones and listened at work, I listened in the car, I listened at home working. I just couldn’t get enough. Jeff has a way with pacing in his books that it’s almost like a song with high’s and low’s, fast and slow, joyful and dark parts all in one big wonderful package.

So you can see I loved this series and am going to give it glowing reviews. Unfortunately since it is a series, and I don’t like to give SPOILERS, this review will actually be short. Suffice it to say, run don’t walk to enter this amazing world he has built. If you’ve read others in the world, this will just be icing on the cake. I’m going to start another series in the same world shortly, so look out for that review in a few months time.

Back to the books. The story is so detailed with emotion and visualization it’s like being transported to another world and you are the main characters. Their lives are so full of joy and disappointment it’s as if they were plucked from next door. It isn’t only friendship, but there is also companionship, familial and romantic relationships all wrapped up with a tidy bow at the end. He shows us how long distance relationships can be good and how trusting can be the best part of one. He also gives us more than just Sera and Cetti’s relationships, he gives us the history of the world and the people around the two girls so it is a whole cast of supporting stories. Some of the best parts were how the girls are trying to change the old ways of society to bring about the end of the Caste system. It’s almost taken right from history books, but with Jeff’s own take on it. The Victorian esk world of Muirwood and the social freedom of Kingfountain contrast so well that it’s like seeing our history on one canvas. The comparisons to the time now and the Victorian era are eerily on display in all their differences.

If you’ve read any of Jeff’s work, you’ll know this when I say he does it all in his epic series’ from world building to character development to complicated plots and supporting stories that you can’t go wrong reading anything. However, if you haven’t read his work before, this is a good one to cut your teeth on. Finally, the ending is well done and tidy. There aren’t any mysteries left and you aren’t left wanting more in the main story. You will want more in the supporting ones and that’s where the other series come in. Don’t plan to finish this one and not want to start another it will keep you tethered to his collection in the end. I’m giving it a 5 of 5 and can’t wait to read more of his work.
