NICUnurse’s Review of One-Eighty by Marie James
For quite a while I’ve been saying that Young Adult romance isn’t my thing. After some deep reflection (and several YA books!) I’ve come to the conclusion that that statement is, indeed, a lie. I’m a fan IF the story is an intriguing one and is well written. And after reading One-Eighty, I’m absolutely looking forward to Catch Twenty-Two!
One-Eighty is a bully romance with a bit of a twist. The bully doesn’t slowly realize he’s in love with the heroine. It’s a full-blown, well…one hundred eighty degrees turn around after an accident took his memories. It made me wonder if my views of any former acquaintances or friends would change if I didn’t have preconceived notions from my memories of them. Definitely food for thought.
Dalton is a huge jerk at the beginning of the story. There’s no way around it. He’s everything we envision a bully being. So when he gets a bit of a comeuppance, I nearly cheered out loud.
Piper is simply trying to hang on until she can escape high school and her small town. She has her eyes set on a brighter future. Can she trust that Dalton isn’t leading her on just to make her life even more miserable than he already has?
NICUnurse’s Rating: I really liked the premise of this story, and I was beyond thrilled when the book grabbed me and hooked me in the first chapter. My heart broke for Piper while I really wanted to strangle Dalton. My intense feelings for the characters by the end of chapter 1 told me a lot. And my instincts weren’t wrong. One Eighty was intense and heartbreaking, and heartwarming all in one. It was also thought-provoking, as I mentioned previously. For YA fans that love a book chocked full of angst, One Eighty by Marie James is definitely a book you don’t want to miss.
