***Cait Sidhe’s review of The King***
Wow. I was not prepared for how dark this novella was! Not having read any of the Wicked series, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. With the fae, you never know what you are going to get. The way the novella starts, I was lulled into this false sense of security that we were going to get a light, happy story with a touch of forbidden love. And it was, for about five minutes, then wham!
Brighton is an interesting character. She’s trying so hard not to be vulnerable and to prove that she’s good enough. There’s a lot of backstory here between her and Caden. There’s still so much that I feel I need to understand more clearly. Not that I didn’t get what was happening but that maybe I didn’t get the why of it happening. One thing didn’t take much explaining though and that’s the heat between her and the King. There’s plenty of angst there!
For a novella, there’s certainly plenty of drama, though not as much romantic action as I would have thought. The middle bit drug out (excruciating in so many ways) longer than I wanted, and there’s a stinking cliffhanger, ugh. I think this one is less a standalone and more a continuation, but it certainly packs enough of a punch to make me consider starting the series from scratch to see what I missed.
I give The King 3.5 out of 5 propellers.
