Alyssa Drake brings it with the second book in her Wiltshire Chronicles!!

Planning her wedding takes a dangerous turn, when a woman realizes a member of her engagement party would rather kill her than walk down the aisle.

So far, Miss Samantha Hastings’ engagement to Benjamin, Lord Westwood, has been tumultuous at best. Kidnapped by the man who murdered her father, nearly beaten to death, and severely poisoned, Samantha barely manages to escape alive.

When the killer reveals his revenge plot had assistance, the Hastings and Westwood families must band together to defend themselves against a new threat, and Samantha concocts a risky plan to draw the accomplice out of hiding. However, this scheme may cost her more than she is willing to sacrifice. There is a traitor in their midst–one who has already committed murder and is willing to do so again.

The masked ball approaches and, by the evening’s end, at least one more person will die. Will Samantha survive until her wedding day… or will her imperfect engagement become a grizzly prelude to murder?

The second book into this intriguing series drags you deeper into the mystery, surrounding the reader in a dizzying array of passion, intrigue, and the richness of the Victorian era. In the vein of Deanna Raybourn and Amanda Quick, this darker installment of the Wiltshire Chronicles will reveal the violent nature of man.

Fly Girl’s Review:

So you’ve seen quite a few reviews of Alyssa’s stuff on the blog, so it should come as no surprise that I loved this book too. Alyssa continues to build the suspense of the mystery behind both Samantha and Benjamin’s families and lives. Her world building gets wider as we roam the countryside of England during the Victorian Era.

Benjamin masters the sense of duty, we so expect, from the era which makes it even more hilarious when Samantha just can’t stay put. I’m pretty sure in the next book we will see him use the riding crop on her behind in the bedroom. But for now, this book keeps it classy as Benjamin and Samantha navigate their new found love from book one.

The mystery doesn’t take first place in this one like it did in A Perfect Plan, now their romance and camaraderie take the prize. They begin trusting one another which makes them work as a team rather than at mixed odds. We do discover that there are a lot more people involved in this twisted power and money play than we thought. She also leaves a few mystery ones in the mix so I’m sure the next book will be filled with darker, tragic scenes than we’ve seen in the previous two books. Enjoy this one for all it’s worth because it isn’t going to go well for some characters in the future. Hopefully those that deserve it get their comeuppance.

As usual I’m giving this high marks of 4 because I love her writing and this story is a great continuation to the first book. It only gets a 4 though because again, another cliffhanger and you all know how much I hate those. So the next one A Perfect Deception will be on auto buy for me.

Author Alyssa Drake has been creating stories since she could read, preferring to construct her own bedtime tales instead of reading the titles in her bookshelves. Enraptured with all types of writing, Alyssa has tried her hand at short stories, collaborations and poetry. However, her first love has always been books. She thoroughly enjoys strong heroines and often laughs aloud when visualizing conversations between her characters.

Alyssa graduated from the University of the Pacific, with a B.S. in business and a concentration in French literature. Currently she resides in Northern California with her blended family, where she works full-time at a chocolate factory.

She believes everyone is motivated by love of someone or something. One of her favorite diversions is fabricating stories about strangers surrounding her on public transportation. Alyssa can often be found madly scribbling notes on a train or daydreaming out the window as the scenery whips past.

A Perfect Plan is Alyssa’s first full-length novel. Her sophomore novel, An Imperfect Engagement, is awaiting its release date.
