Macie had no idea what Colt was doing with her brother at two-thirty in the morning, but she couldn’t deny that she was extremely grateful. She didn’t even flinch when Colt called her brother Truck. He’d apparently been given the nickname when he’d joined the Army. She was trying to remember to call him that, but because he’d been Ford to her as long as she could remember, it was tough.

And as much as she knew her brother would’ve helped her, hearing Colt’s steady voice kept her grounded. She remembered after Truck’s wedding, when she’d been having an anxiety attack, he’d held her against him and talked to her in his low, rumbly voice. How much it had helped. He’d calmed her and helped pull her out of the dark place her mind had gone.

The same was happening tonight. She’d been panicking and running headlong through the parking lot, with no idea what to do or where to go, when he’d forced her to pay attention to her surroundings. He gave her something to concentrate on, and it felt good to let him take over and tell her what to do.

She had no idea why he hadn’t called her after her brother’s wedding. He’d asked her out and she’d badly wanted to spend more time with him, but he hadn’t called. Hadn’t gotten in touch with her. His rejection had hurt, but she really wasn’t surprised. She was a pain in the ass and no one as amazing as Colt would want to be with her.

At the moment, however, she had more pressing issues to think about. Looking back toward the building, Macie didn’t see any sign of the men who’d broken into her apartment, but she could hear their footsteps. Macie ducked behind a car and dropped to her knees.

She winced but ignored the pain and crawled between a row of cars, making sure to stay out of sight. Then she lay down on her belly and crawled under one of the cars in the lot. She was wearing a tight tank top and her sleep shorts, because she hated to feel constricted by clothing when she slept.

“Macie?” Colt asked.

She opened her mouth to respond when she heard one of the men saying to his friend, “She has to be this way. We’ve checked all the other cars.”

It felt like she was having a heart attack. Her chest was tight and she couldn’t get enough air into her lungs. But she couldn’t gasp for oxygen because they’d hear her.

Macie mentally berated herself for calling her brother and not the police. If she’d called 9-1-1, they’d probably be here by now.

 

NICUnurse’s Review of Rescuing Macie by Susan Stoker

Yes, I am a Susan Stoker fan. Yes, I am a 1001 Dark Nights fan. And there are good reasons I’m a fan of both. Susan Stoker has a reputation for writing a good military romance story with a touch of suspense and has a long list of best-selling titles to prove her talent. And 1001 Dark Nights has that kind of reputation, as well. While their books might not be for everyone, they are for me. With that said, I don’t automatically give Susan Stoker’s books 5 propellers just because I’m a fan. And I review enough books that it really has to knock me on my butt and stick with me for at least days, if not weeks or longer before I’ll give a five-propeller review. We all have our favorite authors, and we all know that not all of their books will be 5-propeller reads…even the author’s that are automatic 1-click authors for us. But I can honestly say, this was probably my favorite book of the Delta Forces Heroes series. It absolutely can be read as a stand-alone, but being a pretty big fan, of course, I believe the story is better if you’ve read the books leading up to this one!

Colt and Macie met at her brother’s wedding, but due to some crazy circumstances, don’t really begin dating at that point, despite some serious chemistry. This book picks up a few weeks after her brother’s wedding when she’s literally running for her safety and her life. Colt’s there every step of the way for her, being everything she needs at the time she needs it. But will the danger stay away, or take her down for good?

The things I like most about Susan Stoker’s characters are that the men are military (or former military) members that are take charge kind of men. I married my own fly boy nearly 18 years ago, so I obviously have a soft spot for them. My favorite thing about her female characters? They are flawed, but they come up swinging (sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively), and they don’t let their flaws (or the bad guys) keep them down. They work hard to make a good life for themselves with the help of their very supportive men. And by her writing, it seems like Susan Stoker takes the time to research and really think about what it would be like to be that character.

I honestly could go on and on about why I’m a fan of Susan Stoker, but her reputation really does speak for itself.

NICUnurse’s Rating: Rescuing Macie is the caliber of writing and storytelling that we’ve come to expect from Susan Stoker. Her characters are flawed, yet badass in their own unique ways. Colt is alpha to the max, but he’s also not overpowering and overbearing. Macie deals with extreme anxiety, but she’s not letting it keep her from living her life. And when the chips are down, and danger is imminent, she’s no shrinking violet. With a great combination of sweet, sassy, sexy, and badass-y times, I give Rescuing Macie 4 out of 5 propellers!
