I’ve been doing a lot of confessing with my reviews lately so here goes another: I haven’t read a JLA book in a LONG time. Don’t ask me why. I don’t know. I’ve loved all of the ones that I’ve read, even her books penned under JLynn. So to say that I was beyond excited to read this one might just be a bit of an understatement. Since I scored tickets to Apollycon this year (cue jumping up and down in excitement!!), I thought it would be a good idea to see what she’s been up to since I last picked up one of her books. And what I gem I started with! (Note: this is NOT the first book in the series but I never felt like I missed out on any story line. She wrote just enough in that I wasn’t confused, rather intrigued enough to jump on the first two books ASAP!)
Last year I visited NOLA for the first time ever. Weird because my mom’s side of the family is all over the place in the suburbs and surrounding towns over there. I went for a book signing as an assistant and it was such a fun town! I’m overwhelmed easily in crowds, so I had to take it in small doses, but there is definitely a very different feel about that city. So to say that the world-building in this book was spot-on is also a bit of an understatement. She captures the…spooky, lecherous, and almost criminal vibes the town gives off quite well. Truly…there’s a very unique feel to that town. And late night Cafe du Monde runs are a must when you’re in NOLA! Rosie’s obsession with beignets are pretty much spot on, too. I’d be totally down to do a late night visit there with her!
Now let’s talk characters. I LOVED Rosie’s character. She is funky, sassy, and bad-assy, and I’d totally be down to do a ghost tour with her. And be her bestie. I know we talk about book boyfriends a lot in romance books, but I totally want her as my book bestie! Devlin…well…he’s a little different. Even though he’s lived a high profile life as near royalty in NOLA, he actually seemed a bit…sheltered in a way. Like he had truly never realized people outside of his small circle actually enjoyed their lives. While he seems ruthless and evil in the beginning, he’s just…sad.
Obviously, I loved this book. It’s the 3rd in the de Vincent series and you bet your sweet little tushy I’ll be reading the first two as soon as I can! This one had me up late reading until 2am and trying so hard not to literally LOL in places, because the hubs was snoozing peacefully next to me.
NICUnurse’s Rating: Definitely a 5 out of 5 propellers for this book! Be sure not to miss it!!
