About Magnolia Road:

On the outside, Bryce Hayes is satisfied with the structure of her life, her demanding career, and a series of no-strings-attached relationships, but her brother bounces in and out of rehab, her mother thinks she can beat her son’s addiction, and her father is simply doing what he can to keep a semblance of “normal”. When Bryce’s father, Congressman Hayes, orders her to Granite Harbor, Maine, due to a string of threats to their family coming from an unidentifiable source, she doesn’t expect Ethan Casey, the sexy soldier who slept with her, then walked out, without so much as a goodbye, to be her landlord.

Ethan’s past is riddled with chaos, bullets, and loud noise. After returning to his small town after the war, he’s determined to get back to his roots. Peace, quiet, and working as a game warden for the Maine Warden Service sounds right as rain. But with Bryce in Granite Harbor, staying in his house on Magnolia Road, Ethan can’t stop thinking about his future—and that includes Bryce. But to make things right with the love of his life, he’ll have to open old wounds…and risk losing her forever.

BlueSeal’s Review of Magnolia Road

Magnolia road is the third book in the Granite Harbor Series by J. Lynn Bailey.  The back drop of the four book series is a small town on the rugged coast of Maine – Granite Harbor.  This is a contemporary romance series about a group of flawed thirty-something characters who navigate the back roads of Maine in search of life experience. I found this on the author’s website:  “Lies Unfold. Integrity is questioned.  Heartbreak is consequent. Fate can be a beast.”  Each book is a standalone but they are interconnected.   I picked up here in book three and didn’t miss a beat.

Let’s start with this.  If I am ever in trouble and need to escape then you could probably find me in Granite Harbor, Maine.  I am completed in LOVE with this sweet little coastal town that is just a few hours from one of my favorite places – Boston. I say this now but I might think differently if I needed to escape in the winter when it’s covered in feet of snow.  I want to get coffee at Level Ground Coffee Shop and spend my days reading books from Rain All Day Books.    I’m ready for a trip north right now!  Who’s coming with me?

Bryce is the daughter of Congressman Robert Hayes from California who is temporarily relocating to Granite Harbor to allow some things to “blow over”.  Congressman Hayes has been receiving threatening emails that has him uncharacteristically rattled and Bryce, who is not one to run away, leaves after realizing that her father is terrified.  Why Granite Harbor?  Bryce’s best friend, Alex, lives in Granite Harbor with her husband and children.  Granite Harbor is the epitome of everything this city girl every wanted.  Small.  Quaint.  Lovely.

Ethan works for the Maine Warden Service and owns a beautiful pink house on Magnolia Road in Granite Harbor that he rents out to the seasonal tourists.   Bryce re-thinks her trip to Granite Harbor when she realizes that Ethan, the sexy ex-soldier that she had a one night stand with in LA, is her landlord.  She was certain that he felt the connection too but he was gone when she work up the next morning.  Ethan’s heart is as broken as Bryce’s but he’s afraid that his past will keep them apart and he’s committed to keeping her safe even it means giving her up.

This is a beautiful and heartbreaking depiction of how love and support can help heal a person’s wounds.  It is also a story about how PTSD and drug addiction can destroy people and their families. It is about a man who has found the love of his life but is afraid to be with her.  It is about a woman who loves a man so much that she’s willing to take anything that he will give her. It’s hard to say that I loved this book considering the heavy topics involved but I did.  I cried for my cousin who struggles with drug abuse, for my friends how have come back from deployments with PTSD, and for the families who deal with physical abuse.   It is with a great deal of respect for J. Lynn Bailey that I give Magnolia Road 5 out of 5 propellers!  She was able to deal with these issues in such a respectful and uplifting manner that you really must read this book!

About the Author:

J.Lynn Bailey has loved to write since she learned to read, around the second grade. When she isn’t running after her children, watching COPS, or on the hunt for her next Laffy Taffy joke, you can probably find her holed up in her writing room feverishly working on her next book. She lives in Northern California with her family.
