***************NICUnurse’s Review of Ultimate Sacrifice by KC Lynn***************
Ultimate Sacrifice is book 1 of this author’s new series, Men of Courage. It IS a standalone book, but there are characters that have made appearances in other books. With that said… you can definitely read this book and not be lost, even if you’ve never read any other book by this author. OK… let’s get this review started!
Austin is a hot firefighter (duh… he’s on the cover!). He’s a hardworking guy. A tough guy. But he’s also caring and loyal. And he’s had his eyes set on Zoey for a while. Zoey is the hardworking owner of Overtime, a bar that’s a popular spot for Austin and his firefighting buddies to hang out. She’s also helping to take care of a very ill younger sister. She feels she has no time to devote to a relationship but gives herself one date with Austin after “winning” him in an auction. Austin has other ideas. He’s finally gotten his hands on her, and he is not letting go. A bit of a warning, though: there IS a cliffhanger. Zoey and Austin do get their HEA but there’s an underlying suspense in this book that doesn’t get resolved. In fact, it’s just getting started.
NICUnurse’s Rating: If you’ve followed my reviews for even a short amount of time, you know there are a handful of authors that are automatic one-clicks for me. KC Lynn is definitely one of them. She has a way of pulling you into each story from the very beginning and doesn’t let you go until the end. I love that her characters are all a part of each other’s lives in some way, yet each story is told so that you don’t have to read previous books in order to enjoy and appreciate each individual book. Her characters are sometimes sweet, sometimes gritty, and sometimes a fiery combination of both.
This time around, I am going to give this book 4 propellers. The writing was good, and the story definitely kept the pages turning. But I felt like I couldn’t quite get into Austin and Zoey like I have her other characters. I felt like I connected with Zoey somewhat, but Austin felt just a little… flat to me. And I really hate saying that because, again, KC Lynn is definitely one of my favorite authors and has been for a while. Let me close with this, though. Don’t let my lack of connection with Austin’s character keep you from giving this book a try. It’s got all the elements of a great read. And maybe where I wasn’t able to connect with the main characters, you will.
