Shadow & Flame – Episode 4
Welcome to the world of Rhianna Raines and her band Shadow & Flame. After leaving behind an overly saturated LA music scene and making a fresh start in San Francisco, the band is looking for its big break. With her girlfriend, Misty, by her side, nothing seems impossible even when life takes a very unexpected turn.
With the help of Rhianna’s old friends Abel Gunner and Elias Cain, Shadow & Flame have their chance at fame by playing a top San Francisco venue with a reunion of Abel & Elias’s chart-topping band, Metal Insanity. Just when it looks like it is all coming together, fate intercedes, sending Rhianna and Misty down a far more ominous path. With a series of murders, a killer on the loose, and Rhianna’s dreams taking a dark and sinister turn, reality starts to slip through her fingers as things spiral out of control.
Will all of Rhianna’s hard work and determination, and her chance of making it big, go up in flames? Can she, along with the help of her friends and the woman she loves, stop the nightmares from becoming reality? With so much on the line and so many unknown forces lurking in the shadows will Rhianna survive this fight?
Excerpt:
That’s one of my earliest memories of childhood. She said my first word was Grandma, and my next words were, turn it up!
As soon as I could get my fingers around the neck of a 3/4 Scale Electric Guitar, I was plugged in and ready! I challenge you to name another kid that got her first Gibson SG and Mini Marshall Stack before she was four?
I just know my grandmother would spend countless hours showing me how to play guitar, or her musician friends would come by and give “the kid” lessons daily. Our house was loud and proud and all things music. It made that woman smile every time I plugged in and slammed my fingers down across the strings and learned something new.
Of course, with such a cool grandmother, I was home schooled. She made sure I understood what I needed to get by in this world. What I really loved about growing up was that my education had music woven throughout it. Math was learning how to count in time signatures and scales. She would have me count orchestra members in symphonies.
Her friends would teach me how to read sheet music. Whatever she could do to weave it all together. When it came to English Language and Literature, she would use Dylan and Cohen and McLean, with some Morrison lyrics and poetry sprinkled throughout, as a way of teaching me phrasing and verse. She would then show me how those dudes were influenced by past writers like T.S.Eliot and Dante to name just a few. I was a sponge absorbing it all and feeding off of it.
Review:
I was lucky enough to be able to get an advanced copy of Shadow & Flame. While the ARC had a few errors, I’m sure got fixed in the final copy. Overall, I really liked Shadow & Flame and I wasn’t sure if I was going too. It’s not my typically read, but I enjoyed it all the same. Shadow & Flame is part of the Cain world in that Elias makes an appearance. What makes this novella really unique is that Elias Raven brought two worlds together in this new series. In fact he bridged the gap between the Cain series and the Rocker series by Gina Whitney.
As with Cain, Mr. Raven jumps POV in Shadow and Flame, however the main POV’s are Rhianna and Misty. Rhianna is the lead singer of Shadow & Flame and she’s also a dream walker. Misty, Rhianna’s girlfriend and band mate is also a world renowned tattoo artist.
Now let me explain, this is not your typical love story, in fact, it’s not a love story at all. While Elias Raven can write a good love story, as we’ve seen, Shadow & Flame is a suspense thriller. Because of that, I really got into the story. Yes, this is a LGBT so you will see some girl action but that’s not the main story line. You have two bad ass women who love each other and what they do which is apparent from the get go. The love and support is secondary to what’s really going on in the story. Granted there are a few hot scenes between Rhianna and Misty but remember I said this is a suspense. And Shadow & Flame has it in spades.
Between the cover and the title you’d never guess this story is more about Rhianna, then her band. With the help of Misty and their friend, Royston (the jack of all trades) Rhianna is for one hell of a ride, and it doesn’t end here. So keep the lights on as you join Mr. Raven on this journey, because like me he likes to write about things that go bump in the night.

As a young boy he spent many summers reading classics such as “The Adventures of Sherlock Homes” and “The White Company” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His creativity was constantly being pushed as he learned more and more about the world around him. His taste in literature spanned from classics to science fiction/fantasy. He expanded his taste devouring everything from William Blake to Milton, Dante, Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, T.S. Elliot, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Khalil Gibran, William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, Paul Verlaine, Walt Whitman, Alan Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Carl Sandburg, Dylan Thomas, and Jim Morrison. Did I mention he’s a Musician? …You can often find him playing his guitars (both electric and acoustic) and keyboards and singing (4 octave ranges) in his home studio. He’s a classically trained music aficionado -trained early on by Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Hayden, Liszt, as well as Big Band, Jazz and Rag Time. When Elias is not reading, writing, composing music or cooking…he can be found listening to music, playing games, hanging out with his kids. He enjoys going to concerts, going on culinary adventures, sightseeing, spending the day at the beach or in the mountains…just doing something adventurous!
