I really hate to say this, but I tried to read the Collectors’ Society by Heather Lyons and could only get half way through the first book. I know many of you will read this review and think at this point, this one’s off my list, but I beg of you to finish the review. Just because a book isn’t right for one person doesn’t make it wrong for all readers. So here is my bias and why I lost interest.
It seems to be a great story line. In it, it is believed that all great novels represent an alternate timeline from the one they were written in. In these alternate timelines, the book characters are real. When timelines or books, as we would call them, start to disappear a secret society of characters is put together to figure out what is causing these timelines to disappear and figure out how to stop the end of classic literature as we know it. All in all, should be a great story. But she started with Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” as the lead character and this is where I get lost. (Like how I did that, I get lost, just like Alice got lost in Wonderland.) I didn’t really ever like Alice in Wonderland and contrary to my reading habits, I haven’t read all that many of the classics. And I certainly haven’t read them twice. Collectors’ Society is full of references to classic well loved novels that just don’t spark my imagination.
So for those two reasons, I wasn’t able to get past book one. Now to say this is the same for everyone, would really be making me “God Like.” I know I’m good, but not the great. There are lots of other readers in the world, and I’m sure many of you should and hopefully will pick up this novel and find it engaging and give it rave reviews.
Now you know my bias, I’m not saying don’t read this one, I’m just telling you the person I think that would like this novel is someone who loves classic fiction, wants to know the characters better, likes space time travel, and to start off with, can’t get enough of Alice in Wonderland. So again I say “Happy Reading.”
