POV changes and editors

It’s been awhile since I’ve written an article, sorry about that. I’ve been hard at work on Legacy and another MS that’s completely different. That ones been the screen play.

As you guys probably know I’ve been working with an editor since May and she and I have made a few changes to Legacy. One of those changes was that we went from a first person POV for my main character Alexis and my villain Brenton to a third person limited POV. On my first revision I got Brenton’s voice nailed in this new POV. Alexis however needed a little work, I needed more showing and not telling. Let me just say having a character who’s an empath is not the easiest person to show and not tell. :)

First person worked but it wasn’t great. And like my editor I’m really liking what I can add to Alexis in third person. In first person I was so close to Alexis that I’d miss things readers needed to see. In third person I’ve been able to add those in. Plus I’ve added in more senses, which all characters need. ;)

I hope I’m not making this sound easy, it wasn’t. To make sure we picked the proper POV I had to rewrite the first twenty pages five different ways. That’s right I tried five different POV variations to see which one worked. I started with the second original POV which was first person. I’d originally written Legacy from a third person POV but when I was in my MFA thesis class I changed it to first person, (I really wish my advisor would have been more help, I could be by-passing some changes and working on the characters rather than POV change) and took out a lot.

After making the changes in the first person POV, I tried Alexis as first person and Brenton in third. Next I tried Brenton in first person and Alexis in third. I tried both in third person and then I tried first person with Alexis only, taking Brenton’s part out completely.

My editor and I didn’t like Brenton being gone. He adds something to the story. Sometimes you just want to know what trouble is brewing and Brenton brings that to the table. I think James Patterson for that. I got the idea of having the readers meet the villain from his Murder by Numbers series.

Anyway after working through the five POV’s I was torn over which one was best. I’d actually started thinking that having Alexis in third person and Brenton in first person was my favorite. However my editor really like the third person POV for everything so that’s what we are going with. And with that change I think this last batch of edits, which was the first fifty pages turned into sixty-four when I got finished, and its turning out wickedly awesome.

I’m getting into Alexis and Brenton’s psyche better because I’ve stepped back a little and can see around corners that I hadn’t done in first person. I was to focused in first person and missed great extras that added a richness to the story.

I recently finished the edits and sent them off to my editor and now I get to sit and wait to see what she thinks. This is a little nerve racking and I’ve had to work on more edits since sending out the email. The waiting has been like when you send out query letters and wait for a bite. I’m hoping that if she likes these changes we’ll be moving forward and I’ll get a contract. Yeah right now I’m working with my editor without a contract. She found me from a post I did on Savvy Author. I’d posted my log-line for an agent and this editor really like it. She said it reminded her of her favorite Stephen King novel. Months later we’re still working out the kinks and headed toward a contract and publication, hopefully… fingers crossed

So for those of you working on our MS, working with either an agent or editor listen to their input. Sometimes what you didn’t want to change needs to go so you can create an even better MS.

OMGoodness… OMGoodness… OMGoodness

Yes I’m changing my inter “Little Orphan Annie” the original one.

I know I’ve still been away from the blogs, but I have written my article for PBD, my review of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, I’ve started reading my ARC copy of Shadow of Night, once I finish it I have Into the Woods waiting for me and last but not least next week I have surgery. So things have been a little nuts around here. Plus Flyboy and I have been moving the house around. My office is now upstairs in our family room, (we no longer have a family room), out former office is empty. Though we may either be putting boxes in it or making it in to a bedroom/reading room – we’re not sure yet. It all depends on what we do with out formal dining room. The idea is to take that down and make that our reading room. None of this however we be done anytime soon. We’ve also been hanging our picture frames, even the ones that still need pictures added. I know what pictures need to go in the frames it’s just our photo printer needs a new cord and I haven’t gone to target to print them off. Lazy yes I know but it’s not high on my priority at the moment.

Tonight I’m going to add more info to the other blogs. Tomorrow I hope to have my review of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter posted and sent over to PBD as well as my article.

Research

I know it’s been awhile since I posted, well wrote something. I’ve posted pictures but not anything that’s been happening. There hasn’t been much going on really. I’ve been subbing and now we are on spring break. I worked out the first chapter in book two of Legacy and I’ve started on Chapter 2. I’ve been listening to all the Stephanie Plum books and I’ve fallen’ in love with them. If I can I’ll write some notes over all 18 novels. Since they’ve been out for a while I won’t do a full review, except for book 18 that just came out. Flyboy and I have been working on the house and yard. I know have the ceiling fan I’ve been in love with up in my office, and it will move to our next house, it’s that cool. We’ve been planting new flowers in the front yard and our tree arrives today for the backyard. I also planted the chocolate flowers I ordered from chocolateflowerfarm.com some of the flowers are already starting to sprout. (I bought seeds)

Yesterday I started listening to Discovery of Witches again since Shadow comes out here in a few months. I can’t wait.

I’ve also been to the book store lately to pick up some books on witchcraft for Legacy and the books that follow. Now that I’m in book two I can see where things are going with Alexis and I’m trying to figure out how her power is going to react. It also gives me things to add into Legacy so you guys have a glimpse of what her Legacy is doing to her. The book store I’ve been going to hasn’t helped much so I’m going to return one book (I’d already bought it once and didn’t know it) then head over to the other book store. It’s days like this that I really miss Borders there metaphysical section had more than the store I went to yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s just that I’m in the Bible Belt or what. I know when I lived in Dallas the Borders I shopped at had more that one small bookcase. Heck the one in Hawaii had a hole row, this place has two cases that I’m taller than and its mixed with the spiritual, and everything else that normally goes with metaphysical. I just don’t get it.

Well I need to go and get back so I can get some editing done today. I may need to work on some note cards too to flesh out some new ideas I have for Alexis. I need to know where to bring things in.

Also stop over at paperbackdolls.com my review of Ripper is up since Ripper comes out on the 8th and my latest article was posted yesterday. Tomorrow on PBD you’ll find my interview with Amy Carol Reeves posted. I hope you guys enjoy the post.

Back from Christmas

I’m finally back from Christmas, I know two days was more than enough, ;) . I haven’t been slacking on everything just writing in the blog. In fact I’ve been editing Legacy and it’s really coming along. The books I picked up last week are really helping, and I’d taking out the fillers that Legacy doesn’t need. I haven’t re-recorded yet, but I may have enough to do that next week. I’m hoping to get thru Chapter 3. I’m on Two now and I think I’m almost done with it.

The three books that I’ve been using besides a dictionary, are The Big Book of Words You Should Know, Random House Webster’s grammar, usage, and punctuation, and last but not least The Author’s toolkit.  If you’re a writer and you haven’t looked at these, you should.

During my break I’ve also been working on obtaining some new books to review for PBD and my reviews. I’ve picked up a few that I think will be promising, plus I have two that PBD has asked me to read as well. I can’t tell you when the reviews will be posted, I just downloaded a few of the books last night and I have another one to add that I got today. I’ll keep you post though.

On another note, I’ve updated the book review page and article page, so if you missed the post from PBD you can read them here. I know I still owe you guys some recipes and I promise they are coming, I’ve just had a lot of writing material pop in my head and I want to get it all on paper/computer.

My winter toe socks collection is finished so you won’t see any more toe sock pictures, I know the socks are a little crazy but they are comfy. And cute.

Home

Monday while heading home from CA, I finished my review of Kitty’s Greatest Hit’s by Carrie Vaughn I just have to type it up and send it off to PBD. I also started and am almost finished with my review of Drink Deep I just need to add some finishing touches. Today over at PBD my review of Blood Work by Kim Harrison is posted. On Friday my review of The Help, will be posted and on Sunday the Dolls will be catching up with me. So check out the latest article. I’m not sure which one will be posted I turned in three. ;) November with the Dolls is going to be stalked full of fun books and authors so be on the lookout.

Also stay tuned for more info on Team Makenzie, while we’re at the JDRF they were doing a documentary and Mak got put in it. When I get more details I’ll let you know, Flyboy may even give the news tidbits about our niece if they call. I did go back and add the link to Post: Team Makenzie part 2 if you want to read the news article the did on Makenzie.

I’ll try to have the reviews up for Blood Work this week now that the Dolls have posted it. My review for The Help will be up after Friday and as soon as I have finished with the little touches I want to add to Drink Deep I’ll post it. But all sure be up before Sunday.

Articles, reviews & a bath

I wrote this months articles for the Paperback Dolls, there’s two of them. There not every long but I think you’re going to enjoy them. I sent them in tonight. I also sent in my review for Blood Work, Kim Harrison’s graphic novel. So be on the look out for those over at Paperback Dolls. Tomorrow the Doll have Ghost Story posted so stop by and check out my review and see what else the doll have going on.

This weekend I’ll be working on my review of The Help and hopefully I’ll be able to read a few more stories that I’ve been trying to read. The new Castle novel just came out and I still need to finish book two. I’ve been reading Carrie Vaughn’s short stories and I’ll be writing a review about the book as a whole. So far the book is pretty good. Plus we have so many new books coming out I can’t wait. ;)

Now why I said articles, reviews & a bath well as you know Flyboy and I have Jax, our puppy we adopted after Artemis passed away, well today he decided to jump into the pond behind our house. There were geese in the pond and he wanted to chase them, so he jumped in, got all wet and stinky and now needs a bath. Holly thankfully didn’t jump in but she did scare the geese away. Pups what to do with them. So needless to say Jax hasn’t been allowed to do much today since he’s dirty. I swear I have a two year old.
