Graveyard Child by M.L.N. Hanover

What could be worse than going home?

Maybe I should ask what would be worse than going home where you’re not welcome?

That’s the question Jayne finds out in Graveyard Child. As we’ve learned from the first four books, Jayne Heller, the middle child and only girl, broke from her family when she moved to Arizona and went to ASU. ASU being a secular college and not what her father approved of his only girl leaving home to attend. After years of being away from home she’s now coming full circle and heading back to where her life started. She wants answers, moreover she needs answers, and there’s only one place she can get them. The one place she dreads – home to her parents in Witchita, Kanasas.

Since Darker Angels we’ve know Jayne’s family has some hidden secrets. It was within these pages we learn along with Jayne that her mother had had an affair, yet we didn’t know who the affair had been with. In Vicious Grace we learn how much of a bastrad Jayne’s uncle Eric was, still no one knew what Eric had planned for Jayne. Now at book five we still don’t know what Eric’s plan had been but we do know at some point in Jayne’s life a rider had attached itself to her. From Killing Rites we know the rider is The Black Sun’s Daughter, yet we still don’t know if the rider was part of Eric’s plan or if there was something more going on.

Jayne is still coming to terms with having a rider inside her but she’s more accepting of the Black Sun then she had been before. Jayne’s been growing as a characher since we first saw the twenty something in Unclean Spirits, yet she still has some growth to do and we see that in this book. Jayne’s growth in Graveyard Child may seem a little off at first, and I say this because when she’s with her family she doesn’t always seem as strong and in controlas we’ve see  her in previous books. However when she’s away from her father, and not feeling like a child, we see the woman that Jayne is becoming. Besides its not like the rest of us haven’t been in her shoes when going home, wanting our parents approval, granted most of us probably have it whereas Jayne does not and I can see how defieing him and turning away from his values broke something between them. Though I don’t get the open hatred and aggression he has toward her even as the family skeletons come to light.

As Jayne arrives in the town she brew up in she’s now questioning all of Eric’s actions as she tries not to follow in his footsteps any longer. Nonetheless she does want answers and she’ll stop at almost nothing to get them. Jayne subjects herself to mental and sometimes physical pain to learn the truth about her family history, her mothers affair and Uncle Eric. Dark secrets come to light and Jayne’s world gets turned upside down again. Thankfully she has her friends/ new family by her side, and as always they are there to protect and comfort her.

At the end of Killing Rites when Jayne made the decision to go home she was on somewhat unsteading ground with Ex and Chogyi Jake. Ex because of what happened with his friends and former priest and Chogyi Jake because he left him in Chicage to recoup and hadn’t called him to meet up with them until she was in trouble. As they’ve been driving to Witchita, Kanasas things have gotten better, though she still feels like shit for leaving Chogyi Jake. Now however its not just the three of them, no Aubrey didn’t return he’s still in Chicago with Kim, but they do have Ozzie, the dog Median Clark had been taking care of in Killing Rites.

For Jayne coming home is truly the old coliding with the new. Jayne’s new life and family meets the new, and it doesn’t mesh the way one would hope. Ex and Chogyi Jake meet Jayne’s older brother Jay, and her little brother Kurt along with her mother and father. And the three of them met Carla for the first time. Carla is Jay’s pregnat girlfriend, he met in Flordia. In Graveyard Child the family is preparing for the “shot gun” wedding Jay has to have since getting Carla pregnat. So it’s not like the family isn’t stressed already when Jayne arrives, and then there are the unseen forces that have popped their ugly head s up.

Upon arriving home Jayne not only has to fight with her father about the choices she has made, she also has internal struggles she’s dealing with when the Invisible College and Graveyard Child make their move. The Invisible College turns out to be the easiest problem she has to face. Between her parents and the remaining parties of the Invisible College Jayne, Ex and Chogyi Jake learn the truth about that happened to Jayne when she was sixteen, how long the rider has been in her and how long members of her family have known about riders. You’ll be amazed to learn the truth just as the gang was.

With all this new information you gotta wonder what comes next. What can and will M.L.N. Hanover do to Jayne. The series didn’t seem like it was ending but one can never tell. I can see two possibly three more books come before the end.

Jayne seems like she’s in a better place at the end of Graveyard Child. She’s learned who/what she is, she’s now moved past all her family issues and is ready to make her own way with her friends in tow. This was a truly growth book for Jayne. She’s no longer the scared twenty something now she knows whats out there and is still scared but knows how to handle herself and the things that go bump in the night. Instead of wondering if Eric would have done something this way or that she doesn’t care because she is making her own decisions and not following blindly after her deceased uncle.

We see a little growth in Ex but I’d like to see more. I’m ready to hear what he has to tell Jayne that he wouldn’t say in Killing Rites. He needs to ge over the fact that Jayne’s being ridden and speak his mind/heart. As cor Chogyi Jake I’m not sure what growth he needs, when we first met him he was a pretty well arounded character. Maybe his thing is the need to be there as a protector, friend, and educator cor Jayne. The one person that grounds everyone else. I’d like to see a little more from the Aubrey and Kim relationship with Jayne. We actually talk with them in Graveyard Child but Jayne is still feeling guilty for what Eric did to them when she had nothing to do with it. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens between the Invisible College and Jayne now. This book was a real eye opener and there are so many things that can be explored. Lastly we have the status of Jayne and the Black Sun’s Daughter and what’s going to happen with it. Well Jayne get read of her or will something else happen. The new dynamics are going to be interesting and fun to watch.

I hope you enjoy this latest installment as much as I did.

Interview with Amy Noelle

Hi Amy I’m glad you could join us. I hope I don’t make this too long for you but I do have a habit of asking loads of questions.

Thanks for having me! I appreciate it!

Who are your favorite characters?

Well, I’m partial to Josh for obvious reasons. He’s sexy, smart, and sweet and has incredible patience for Nic. I also love her. She’s neurotic and a bit nutty but sarcastic and has a good sense of herself. I also like Kim a lot. She tells it like it is and is a true leader amongst her friends.

Who are your favorite authors?

I tend to a read a lot of action mysteries. JD Robb, Iris Johansen, Patricia Cornwell (earlier stuff, not the latest), Stephen King. Old school classics I like are Faulkner and Fitzgerald.

What books did you grow-up reading?

I was a voracious reader as a kid and the big books then were The Babysitter’s Club, A Wrinkle in Time, Clan of the Cave Bear & Sweet Valley High. And of course the books assigned in school. Gone with the Wind is one of my all time favorites and I read that for the first time in 8th grade I think.

Are you a cat person? Dog person? Or animal person?

Animal person. I love all animals but lived in an apt until recently so I’ve only had cats out of fairness to a dog. One day I’ll get one, if my two cats will allow me.

Who got you interested in writing?

I think I was just born that way. English was always a class that I enjoyed the most and I’ve always had an active imagination, so it was fun to take what I come up with in my head and put it down on paper.

You’ve written fan-fiction can you tell us a little about that? Can you share any with us? What got you started? Who did you write about?

Absolutely. I’ve been writing fanfic for about 3 ½ years at this point. All Twilight, all Bella and Edward, who captured my imagination and I didn’t want to let them go when I was done with the Twilight books. Friends introduced me to fic and before I knew it I was writing my own. I’m Nolebucgrl on fanfiction.net and my stories are still up and I’ll be expanding one when I get a little more free time. I write romance/humor most of the time, which is what Code Red is as well.

What are you currently working on?

My second novel, called The Hot Corner. Not sure how much I can share but it’s nearly done, another romance, some humor, some drama, lots of heat, I think. It’s got a sports aspect to it as well which is fun for me as I’m a rabid sports fan.

Are you going to see more of Nic and Josh or maybe Jen & Ryan?

If there’s a call for them, sure. I’ve had a reviewer suggest they’d like to see some of the rest of the gang again. I didn’t have plans for a sequel but if my characters appeal enough to readers, I’d be happy to explore them more.

You consider yourself a crazy football fan why?

Because I watch football from morning til night during the season. I just watched the Combine. I watch the draft. I play fantasy football. I just love the sport and mourn when it’s not on. I’m not as bad a fan as I used to be (throwing things at the TV) but I still yell a lot. Hehe

Did you base Nic’s love of baseball off of your love of football?

Sort of! I’m a baseball fan as well so I gave her that trait and even my team.

Do you watch Supernatural too?

Yes. Not as religiously as Nic does, though. I’ve actually not enjoyed seasons 6-8 very much and I’m much less into it than I used to be.

Are you that obsessed about any TV show?

No. I do have a lot of them that I love, but nothing I’ll schedule my life around. I am a homebody though!

How’d you come up with Code Red?

I actually just woke up one day with Nic’s voice in my head. I jotted down her story and stuck it away for a long time, planning to do it as a fic but the timing never worked and it fit an original better anyway.

Do you have girlfriends like Jen, Kim, Mandy and Ashley?

The girls are a combination of people I know. I didn’t parrot anybody perfectly, but I did take traits and come up with similarities. I wish I had as tight a group as they do! I envy them!

What’s your favorite movie?

Too many to name! Some of my faves are the aforementioned Gone With the Wind, Grease, The Hangover, Pitch Perfect is on repeat on my TV right now, The Breakfast Club & Heathers.

Do you have siblings?

Yes, I have a younger brother, Mike. He’s 4 years younger and we’re very close.

What do you love about thunderstorms?

My father actually has a degree in meteorology and whenever there was a storm, where normal people were getting inside, he had us in the garage peering out at it, watching the lightning, feeling the thunder, hearing the rain pelt down. I’ve just always enjoyed storms and living in FL, you better!

Are Lily and Logan anything like Hunt and Win?

Haha no! Well, Logan likes his food, like Win does, but neither of them are like Hunt. Lily is a sweetheart who likes to kiss me and have secret snuggles after I go to bed (she doesn’t want to be held, I gave that trait to Hunt) and Logan is pretty friendly. Both are shy around new people though.

How’d you come up with Huntington Peabody the third, and Winchester?

Their names? Winchester is from Supernatural. I figured Nic would want to name one of her cats after her obsession. Huntington Peabody the Third was just the snottiest name that I could think of for a cat! As to their personalities, I loved the idea of one cat who was a tubby love and the other who was vengeful but loved his mom and nobody else. Cats are finicky and they will punish you when they’re mad. Writing a cat like that was fun.

The email to Jen about BOB – what triggered that? Could Nic have made the list longer? (I loved the email and everything that happens with the email)

Nic was bored at work and Jen was joking about her needing a man so she felt the need to defend BOB’s ability to stand in as a boyfiend. I’m glad you loved the email! It was fun! I’m sure Nic would have had more if not for the untimely interruption.

What’s next for you?

I have about 7 or so chapters left of The Hot Corner to write, then I’ll reread it and play with it a bit before submitting it to my publisher. Then I need to write some more outtakes for my fic and expand one of my stories there, Fill Me with Your Poison.

Do you have any advice for writers like yourself just starting out?

Just start. Never in a million years would I think that I would have my own novel coming out four years after I started writing creatively again. Letting my mind free, letting the characters come out to play, has been such a pure joy to me. Writing should be fun. Let your imagination go and have a good time!

Being a military brat you’ve travelled a lot, where is your favorite place?

Favorite place I ever lived with Southern California. The weather, the beaches, the amusement parks…awesome place. Favorite place I’ve visited was Hawaii. I have a thing for the ocean and love living near the water.

Where do you like to write?

Planted on my couch with the recliner up, the TV on and a bottle of water next to me.

Nic seems to like take-out a lot is that true for you too or do you cook?

I eat more than my fair share of take out. I can cook, I just don’t often feel like it after a full day of work and cooking for yourself isn’t nearly that much fun! But I can cook, simple stuff.

Have you ever needed a Code Red?

Not lately! Sadly! I have definitely gone through periods where I shut myself off the way Nicole did. I did need some saving in high school and college. Code Red would have been a good thing to implement!

Code Red by Amy Noelle

I’ll be honest it took me a little while to get into Code Red, and it had nothing to do with the story. It had to do with my issues with straight up romances and two reviews that I had to write up for new releases that came out before Code Red. I had started reading the first chapter but stopped to read the other books because I was on the fence – again. The beginning screamed romance and not the kick ass kind that I like, i.e. Night Huntress and the Accidental Witch Trilogy.

Now let me say I have nothing against romances but unless they have action (not all sexual) I just don’t get into them. As you guys have read from my others reviews. But I had to read this book for two reasons: one my sister-in-law suggested it and in effect I took that as her asking me to read an author she was interested in. She’d read some of Amy’s fan-fiction so I had the family obligation to check out this new author. The second after my sister-in-law’s request I told the author I’d read it. So here I am now that I know its a straight up romance dreading reading it because the last few hadn’t given me much hope.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I got past the first chapter. That’s right I enjoyed Code Red. It drew me in with its quips and sarcasm and it reminded me of the The Kitchen Witch and My Favorite Witch the two books I love in Annette Blair’s Accidental Witch Trilogy. Like those I couldn’t put the book down. I finished reading the book in two days while I had to stay home and rest with a stupid cold. I read through the night, and that’s saying something from a girl would doesn’t like many romances – two series that’s it. If Amy writes another book that’s anything like this one I’ll read it.

Now mind you I did have an ARC copy so I did find a few errors in the story that I’m sure have been fixed for the final release. Other than that I read Code Red read smoothly. Amy wrote two great believable primary characters and a handful of wickedly funny secondary ones. Her primary characters are funny too don’t get me wrong, you’ll be laughing threw the whole book.

Code Red is about Nicole, Nic for short, a twenty-six year old technical writer. Josh is the leading man, he’s a twenty-nine year-old salesman for the company Nic works for. Josh is out of the New York office and he’s one of the top senior salesman. The story takes place in Chicago since that is where Nic lives. Josh just landed a major contract with Starfire a company whose creating a MP3′s, smartphones, and other gadgets. Josh needs the best technical writer in his company and he found her, Nic however she don’t like writing about gadgets.

When the two meet there is chemistry but they work together and Nic has sworn off relationships since her college days. She has four great friends who are like sisters to her that she met in college. The five of them came up with an idea to save each other from heartache by having an intervention if someone might hurt their hearts. They called it a code red. Three of the five friends are married and used the code red when they met their husbands. Two of the girls aren’t married and Nic has just found her and her best friends match. No their not the same man. I’m telling you this much because besides the banter between Nic and Josh which is the heart thumping, jump our partners bones kind of fun, the interactions between Nic and her four friends. Nic’s four friends, Jen, Kim, Ashley and Mandy will have you laughing out loud and wanting to call your best friends too. These women have a friendship like the one I have with my best friend. I can call her anytime and she’ll be there. And all four girls are there for Nic. They call each other names, make lewd and crude comments and so much more.

You’ll have plenty of heat, excitement and laughter as you read Code Red. It’s a must read and I can’t wait to read it again. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Renegade By Amy Carol Reeves

Renegade is the latest chapter in Amy’s Ripper series. She changed up her writing style when she created Renegade. Abbie doesn’t have many visions this time around; instead we have POV changes every so often, with a new character. The only time I got confused with the POV change was at the beginning when I’m expecting Abbie and get this new character. For the most part we always have chapter change or and ending of a scene before the POV changes. When Abbie does have visions they happen the same way they had in Ripper. It’s as if Abbie is the person doing the action in her vision.

As for the story its self, Renegade starts a few months after Ripper ends, roughly spring time in London. Abbie is still trying to come to grips with the fact she killed four members of the conclave. However, Max is still alive and well, which makes Abbie nervous and she’s keeps watching behind her and wondering when he’s going to strike. For the most part everyone goes on with their lives as if Max never existed. Even when it comes to the major members of the conclave, their not really missed. Abbie, William Siddal, and Simon St. John created a good cover story for why Dr. Julian Bartlett, Robert Buck, Marcus Perkins and John Brown had left the city the day their house burned down. This works because William and Simon run the hospital in White Chapel with the help of Abbie and the nurses.

Abbie of course is still trying to go to medical school and Lady Westfield still isn’t happy about it. Though that’s not the only thing Grandmother isn’t excited about. :) You’ll have to read the story to find out the others.

As you’ve gathered Max, William, Simon and Lady Westfield make appearances in this book as do Inspector Abberline, Christina Rossetti and Richard, grandmother’s butler. I mention Richard because we get to learn a little bit more about him in this book. Inspector Abberline if you remember was the lead inspector in the ripper murders. He has a new set of crimes to solve and he finds Abbie at one of the crimes scenes. She’s not involved but by the end of the novel she might have an idea on who’s behind them.

Abbie’s aunt Christina is able to make some arrangements for Abbie to meet Dr. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Dr. Anderson was the doctor, Dr. Bartlett wanted Abbie to learn from at the college that women could go to learn medicine. Interesting things happen during this meeting and everything that comes after.

Overall I liked and enjoyed reading this chapter in the series. We get to learn a little more about Abbie and we see her grow. In fact we see some of her memories become clearer as she revisits the past, the days leading up to her mother, Caroline’s death. The realization that she comes to are profound and they leave her a little shaky. I really liked this part because afterward I think the information she’s gathered rounds out he character and shows her growth.

On the flip side of that however is the turmoil between her and William. While I don’t mind love triangles I thought the one with Abbie, William and Simon ended in the last book. It popped it’s head up in this book and at first I was a little confused by it but I understood by the end. There are a few reasons why I get that it had to pop up. For one thing I had to remember that Abbie is still a teenager. At sixteen, even though it is the 1800′s, it’s not out of place to date or marry a older man at that age.

What did bother me, or probably confused is the better term, was that in Ripper Abbie seemed to be more mature about her relationships and didn’t really care what her Grandmother thought. In this book that’s not the case, she actually starts listening to her grandmother’s prejudice which then pushes the love triangle into the picture. Abbie however isn’t the only one to act a little out of sorts, both Simon and William in my opinion do considering their ages, and they only act different when it comes to Abbie. The one thing this confusion/ triangle does that I really liked was that we got to see the different sides of William and Simon. While William’s wasn’t surprising because we saw some of it in Ripper Simon’s was definitely insightful. We learn so much more about Simon and why he is the way he is.

With all that said I do highly recommend everyone read this installment and if you haven’t read Ripper you really should. I do love reading Abbie and right now this is the only YA I’m reading and from the way Renegade ended there will be a third book to this series. It’s going to be interesting to see where Amy takes Abbie from here and I can’t wait to read about it.
